before european settlement

the first recorded inhabitants of area native americans nottoway, meherrin , chowanoke tribes.


the first european known visit area john white of roanoke colony in 16th century. visited expedition jamestown, virginia in 17th century.


the last native inhabitants, chowanoke, expelled after warring english in 1675 , 1676. after that, moved reservation east of chowan river in gates county, north carolina.


colonial era american revolution

the first known deed property in area land grant dated november 5, 1714, made henry wheeler tract on meherrin river included murfreesboro. several other transactions followed , in 1735, joseph parker founded meherrin church. second-oldest baptist church in north carolina (now known meherrin baptist church).


on may 27, 1746, james jordon scott sold 150 acres (0.61 km) on meherrin river, (part of wheeler s original grant) irish immigrant, william murfree nansemond county, virginia. on december 12, 1754, general assembly designated murfree s landing king s landing, imports , exports inspected representative of king.

on july 17, 1781, british forces led banastre tarleton , tarleton s raiders attacked maney s neck near murfree s landing. william murfree s son, hardy murfree led local militia repulsed attack @ skinner s bridge.


william murfree contributed 97 acres (390,000 m) of land surrounding murfree s landing in 1787 growing settlement form town. town chartered general assembly , renamed murfreesboro on january 6, 1787. act provided establishment of public dock town located @ northernmost point of navigation on meherrin river.


murfreesboro designated congress in 1790 official port of entry, , customs records indicate profitable three-cornered trade new england , west indies.


in 1809, hertford academy established in murfreesboro, opening in 1811 male students. in 1814, harriet sketchly , martha sketchly arrived , expanded female department of academy considerably. 1849, renamed chowan baptist female institute, forerunner of chowan university.


in 1831 murfreesboro among towns sent armed forces (these led captain solon borland) southampton county, virginia quell nat turner s slave rebellion. result of these events, virginia , north carolina reduced rights of free blacks, prohibiting education of both free blacks , slaves.
