history

it said ambala district founded amba rajput during 14th century ce. version name corruption of amba wala meaning mango-village, mango groves existed in immediate neighborhood. still, version district has taken name after goddess bhawani amba temple still exists in ambala city..in 1709, battle of ambala fought , sikhs captured ambala mughals.

ambala cantonment established in 1843 after british forced leave karnal cantonment following malaria epidemic of 1841–42 in there not known effective means control malaria epidemic in days. cantonment houses 2 corps , 1 of 3 strike corps of indian army.

ambala air force base 1 of oldest , largest airbases inherited british iaf. airbase spitfires , harvards flown instructors of advanced flying training school took part in 1947-48 kashmir operations. subsequently, ambala front line airfield many years. home various aircraft inducted indian air force. vampires, ouragans, hunters, etc. flew base. airbase briefly attacked in 1965 b-57 bombers of pakistan air force. today, airbase houses 7 wing squadrons of jaguars , mig-21 bisons. unit of french-made dassault rafale based @ ambala air base.

in november 1949 mahatma gandhi s assassin, nathuram godse hanged @ ambala central jail along narayan apte, co-conspirator.
