the tigers promoted holaday major leagues on june 6, 2012, team added him 40-man roster due injuries starting catcher alex avila. became third position player selected in 2010 draft reach majors, following bryce harper , kole calhoun. holaday made mlb debut day. had 1 hit in 4 @ bats during debut.


holaday recalled june 17, 2013, when catcher alex avila placed on disabled list. after 2013 season, tigers informed backup catcher brayan peña not re-sign him, giving holaday opportunity become backup avila. holaday competed james mccann backup catcher behind avila during spring training in 2015. mccann won competition, , holaday began season in minor leagues.


once again, holaday entered spring training in 2016 competing backup role, time jarrod saltalamacchia. despite losing job, holaday attracted large amounts of trade interest due hitting .438/.455/.969 in 16 games , lack of minor league options remaining. in 4 seasons tigers, holaday hit .251/.283/.340 3 hr , 30 rbi in 108 games.
