temples

there several old temples in ulsoor, scattered throughout area. oldest temple halasuru someshwara temple, built kempe gowda in 16th century , mixture of hoysala, chola , vijayanagara architecture.

sri subrahmanya temple, halasuru, more 800 years old, prominent temple.

gurudwara sri guru singh sabha

the largest sikh shrine in bangalore, sri guru singh sabha, situated on banks of ulsoor lake. sprawling white building on edges of lake, indeed known place on city s landscape. sri guru singh sabha gurudwara @ ulsoor built in 1943 g russell , inaugurated in 1945. while jollys , sahani families main forces behind construction of gurudwara, community members , kohli , chandoks families financed under leadership of ahulwalia , gill family neighboring haudin road sikh foundation. later in 1975, first floor of gurudwara built. monument known splendid structure - has added beauty of area , kensington road situated, popularly known gurudwara road. being biggest gurudwara in city, huge gathering of sikhs come here on wednesdays prayer , langar on sundays. devotees offered free meals on sundays, in known langar sewa . around 1000 people visit gurudwara on sunday mornings, while more 2,000-3000 people visit in afternoon , seek blessings post blessings have guru ka langar(meals).

the eastern watch tower on ulsoor lake had chinese bell 4 3 in height , 3 1.5 in diameter. chinese inscription read bell cast during reign of emperor chien lung in 1741 , dedicated san yuan kung temple. investigations b l rice, led pensioner , veteran of opium war, t cribb narrating story of presence in bangalore. bell taken hill temple in nanking, c troop of madras regiment, , brought st. thomas mount, madras, shipped bangalore civil , military station, suspended near quarter guard of troop. bell struck on hour, day , night , sound heard distance of 3 miles. cracked on being stuck 12lb shot 1 rainy night, making useless, after dismounted , given mr. smith waterworks engineer placed @ tower (p. 26,27). bell seen in old photographs, has since been removed madras sappers museum.
