two of earliest resorts in poconos opened philadelphia quakers: inn @ buck hill falls (1901) , pocono manor (1902). buck hill s stone facade became model close 300 stately stone-and-shingle homes in region. buck hill closed in 1990 while inn @ pocono manor considered oldest continuously operating resort in poconos.


buckwood inn opened in 1911 1 of first golfing resorts, spanish colonial revival building white-moorish architecture , spanish tiled roofs. bandleader fred waring purchased resort in 1943, renamed shawnee inn, , broadcast radio shows there. in 1994 fodor s identified shawnee inn resort on banks of delaware river. skytop lodge, built in 1928, described dutch colonial-style manor house. resort encompasses 5,500 acres 30 miles of hiking trails. novelist faith baldwin wrote 1932 visit skytop, here friendly mountains, round-breasted, smiling in clear, rosy light of dawn.


tamiment popular resort among jewish singles working , emerging middle class , has been described progressive version of catskills... 2,200 acre facility opened in 1921 generate income rand school of social science, socialist school in new york. tamiment playhouse entertained resort guests original revue every saturday night during 10-week summer season, , many prominent broadway , tv figures gained experience there. playhouse referred poconos boot camp broadway writers , performers. revues discontinued in 1960 , resort closed down in 2005.


unity house, 655-acre pocono retreat, offered affordable vacations factory workers. resort owned seventy years international ladies garment workers union, , served staging ground union activities. ron devlin of morning call referred unity house blue-collar hilton. eleanor roosevelt visited unity house many times , wrote, ...you not put children in more favorable environment... resort closed down in 1990, falling victim changing times , declining union membership.


in 1945 rudolf von hoevenberg established first honeymoon resort in poconos, farm on hill. 1960, poconos rivaled niagara falls honeymoon destination, attracting 100,000 couples year. morris wilkins, co-owner of cove haven, invented heart-shaped bathtub in 1963 way lure honeymoon customers. tub appear in other couples resorts , became symbol of pocono resort business. author lawrence squeri wrote in 2002, if americans today asked name image best represents poconos, chances many cite couples resorts , heart-shaped bathtubs...


in 1950s kiesendahl family purchased 12-bedroom boarding house along lake teedyuskung. became woodloch resort and, of 2014, encompassed 1,000 acres , accommodated 900 guests in variety of lodgings. travel + leisure identified lodge @ woodloch (founded 2006) number 3 destination spa in world.


as of june 2015, there 4 pocono resorts indoor water parks: great wolf lodge, h20ooohh! @ split rock resort, aquatopia @ camelback resort, , kalahari resort. in 2014 jayne clark of usa today wrote, former honeymoon capital of world, poconos – rebranded in 2007 pocono mountains – continues fine-tune image family-friendly outdoor adventureland, health spa getaway , emerging waterpark capital.


gambling

in november 2006 pocono downs harness-racing complex opened first slot-machine parlor in state of pennsylvania. owned mohegan indian tribe of connecticut , included 2 gambling floors 1,100 machines. mount airy casino resort opened in october 2007 2,500 slot machines. owner, louis denaples, later charged perjury due suspected ties organized crime figures. turned resort on daughter , avoided prosecution.


camping

the poconos home several scout camps. camp minsi, owned boy scouts minsi trails council, centrally located in poconos on property of 1,200 acres (490 ha) in pocono summit. camp mosey wood, owned girl scouts eastern pennsylvania council, located on property of 425 acres (170 ha) in white haven, pennsylvania. other scout camps located in poconos include goose pond scout reservation (lake ariel), resica falls scout reservation (marshalls creek), , trexler scout reservation (jonas).

skiing

skiing $230 million year industry in poconos , in 1987 accounted 1 quarter of region s tourist business. pennsylvania native john guresh, employee @ big boulder ski resort, credited bringing ski industry poconos. in winter of 1956–57 invented machine resembling lawn sprinkler atop sled generate artificial snow. joyce gemperlein of philadelphia inquirer wrote, until guresh perfected snowmaking @ big boulder, skiing in poconos relatively minor sport. ski resorts in region not rely on natural snow and, according big boulder manager ken knize, there times when conditions right skiing 2 weeks year. cal conniff, president of national ski areas association, regarded guresh 1 of pioneers of u. s. ski industry.
