History Brackla



until 1936, 900 acres (3.6 km) of land occupied east west bridgend industrial estate, brackla , brackla industrial estate farmland. in 1936, in view of increasing likelihood of war germany, british government decided build 2 new royal ordnance factories, including 1 @ bridgend on site of bridgend industrial estate. store munitions, dug 8 long shafts under brackla hill, connecting 2 new ordnance factories on brackla industrial estate. both facilities connected great western railway south wales main line, line brackla facility running along church acre. @ peak, rof 53 employed 40,000 people, , biggest single factory in western europe.


after world war ii, rof 53 stopped production @ end of 1945, , closed end of 1946. land sold property developers, north of railway developed housing.


nuclear bunker

in late 1960s, 2 of former munitions tunnels redeveloped ministry of defence on behalf of home office nuclear command bunker south wales, designated srhq 8.2. brackla became regional control centre of wales, redesignated rghq 8.2. sold in 1996, has been derelict ever since.
