floors 4–9 suffered partial collapse and/or fire damage result of september 11 attacks. floors 1–3 not damaged. building s structural integrity on upper floors partially compromised due impact of steel , other debris north tower. other collapsed sections due fire damage. portions of internal collapse , burnout found on upper floors, floors 6–8. black exterior facade suffered severe fire damage. floors 5–9 on fire after collapse of south tower. section of fuselage united airlines flight 175 landed on roof. 5 wtc least damaged building of entire complex. borders bookstore undamaged after both towers collapsed. building location of survivors staircase, recovered building s underground after demolished.

the building demolished weakening internal structure , using cables pull down rest of structure, same way 4 world trade center , 6 world trade center demolished. last standing section of 5 wtc removed december 2001.

the federal emergency management agency (fema)/asce building performance study team found connections between structural steel beams failed in fire. apparent in collapse of 5 world trade center, fireproofing did not protect connections, causing structure fail. structural failure didn t cause entire building collapse, seen after attacks structural skeleton remained intact.
