the original network version of u.s. millionaire , subsequent primetime specials hosted regis philbin. when syndicated version being developed, production team felt not feasible philbin continue hosting, show recorded 4 episodes in single day, , team looking qualities in new host: had love contestants , willing root them. rosie o donnell offered hosting position on new edition, declined opportunity immediately. meredith vieira, had competed in celebrity charity event on original network version, named host of new syndicated edition.


abc offered vieira hosting duties on syndicated millionaire sweeten 1 of re-negotiations network s daytime talk show view, moderating @ time. when show honored gsn on gameshow hall of fame special, vieira herself further explained motivation hosting syndicated version follows:



from 2007 2011, when vieira concurrently working co-host of today, guest hosts appeared in second half of each season of syndicated version. guest hosts filled in vieira included philbin, al roker, tom bergeron, tim vincent, dave price, billy bush, leeza gibbons, cat deeley, samantha harris, shaun robinson, steve harvey, john henson, sherri shepherd, tim gunn, , d. l. hughley.


on january 10, 2013, vieira announced after eleven seasons syndicated millionaire, leaving show part of effort focus on other projects in career. finalized taping of last episodes show in november 2012. while philbin briefly considered return show, cedric entertainer introduced successor when season twelve premiered on september 2, 2013. on april 30, 2014, deadline announced cedric had decided leave show in order lighten workload, resulting in him being succeeded terry crews 2014–15 season. crews succeeded chris harrison, host of bachelor , spin-offs, when season 14 premiered on september 14, 2015.
