in 1984, according jane s military review, there 3 major geographical commands, western, central, , eastern. there reported 130,000 ranks, , each command garrisoned army comprising single armoured division, mechanised division, , corps of 3 infantry divisions, though eastern command had 2 corps totalling 6 divisions. there independent military region, single infantry division, garrisoned isle of youth.


a u.s. defense intelligence agency assessment in first half of 1998 said army s armour , artillery units @ low readiness levels due severely reduced training, incapable of mounting effective operations above battalion level, , equipment in storage , unavailable @ short notice. same report said cuban special operations forces continue train on smaller scale beforehand, , while lack of replacement parts existing equipment , current severe shortage of fuel increasingly affecting operational capabilities, cuba remained able offer considerable resistance regional power.


2002 organization

in 1999 revolutionary army (ejercito revolucionario) represented approximately 70 percent of cuba s regular military manpower. according iiss, army s estimated 45,000 troops including 6,000 active , 39,000 members of ready reserves completing forty-five days of annual active-duty service necessary maintaining status, conscripts fulfilling military service requirement.


the iiss reported in 1999 army s troop formations consisted of 4 5 armored brigades; 9 mechanized infantry brigades; airborne brigade; fourteen reserve brigades; , border brigade. in addition, there air defense artillery regiment , surface-to-air missile brigade. each of 3 territorial armies believed assigned @ least 1 armored brigade-usually attached army s headquarters-as mechanized infantry brigade. well, known border brigade in guantanamo , @ least 1 ground artillery regiment (attached mechanized infantry brigade), based in las tunas, under eastern army s command.


1996 organization

in 1996, according jane s information group, army organized 3 territorial military commands 3 armies, 1 army each command. @ time, there estimated 38,000 army personnel.
