hynek born in chicago czech parents. in 1931, hynek received b.s. university of chicago. in 1935, completed ph.d. in astrophysics @ yerkes observatory. joined department of physics , astronomy @ ohio state university in 1936. specialized in study of stellar evolution , in identification of spectroscopic binary stars.
