while in graduate school, involved three-year ethnographic project funded macarthur foundation , led mimi ito; project examined youths use of technologies through interviews, focus groups, observations, , document analysis. publications included article in macarthur foundation series on digital learning, identity volume called why youth (heart) social network sites: role of networked publics in teenage social life. article focuses on social networks implications youth identity. project culminated co-authored book hanging out, messing around, , geeking out: kids living , learning new media.


she published untraditional research on youth using facebook , myspace in 2007. demonstrated young users of facebook white , middle-to-upper class, while myspace users tended lower-class black teenagers. work translated , relayed major media.in addition blogging on own site, addresses issues of youth , technology use on dmlcentral blog. boyd has written academic papers , op-ed pieces on online culture.


her career fellow @ harvard s berkman center started in 2007. in january 2009, boyd joined microsoft research new england, in cambridge, massachusetts, social media researcher.
