echo lake shallow, oligotrophic lake situated @ 10,600 ft (3,230 m) above sea level near mount evans in colorado rocky mountains. formed during latest period of glaciation 10,000 years ago. glaciers retreated in chicago creek valley, lateral moraines formed natural dam drainage, forming lake. ecosystem around lake dominated engelmann spruce (picea engelmannii) , subalpine fir (abies lasiocarpa), limber pine (pinus flexilis) on exposed sites.
