the sculpture display overlooks ludington harbor , shows weathered sea captain steering ship. dedicated ludington native charles f. conrad, founder of lake michigan carferry service contained automobile ferry ss badger. ss badger, along ss spartan , ss city of midland 41 carferries, purchased conrad in 1991 defunct michigan-wisconsin transportation company. converted badger passenger , auto ferry. lake michigan carferry service functioned independent enterprise ten years without government subsidies. s.s. badger has ferried 34,000 vehicles , 115,000 passengers between ludington, michigan, , manitowoc, wisconsin, 1992 2014.


the sculpture created in 2000 , named sailor sculptor kristin kokkin. first sculpture placed @ ludington s waterfront park. honors have sailed on lake michigan.

the sculpture twelve-foot representation of car ferry carrying automobiles. there 113 local donations given bronze display. ludington has long history of car ferries. s.s. badger, traveling across lake michigan wisconsin every summer, last of ludington ferries carrying automobiles. there several descriptive , history plaques around 2007 main display tuck langland of granger, indiana.

the sculpture dedicated in july 2009 life-size representation of man , boy fishing @ nearby hamlin lake. has meaning grew @ hamlin lake or vacationed there. older man taking fish young boy s hook. 1 of significant , recognizable sculptures in ludington. sculptor created multiple piece bronze sculpture display w. stanley proctor, same artist designed follow leader popular multiple piece bronze display.

ludington s lumbering era

the eleven foot bronze sculpture represents michigan logging wheels , lumbering industry of late nineteenth , twentieth-century. shows horse pulling logs typical ludington event of time period lumber industry played historical role on great lakes.


the large stone display has ludington s history etched wall. explains how james ludington set mill , lumber industry in 1859. hamlet settlement changed name pere marquette become town of ludington. town plotted out , not bear ludington s names, names of siblings , prominent lumber barons of area @ time. etched history goes on explain ludington prospered because of local lumber industry. explains harbor developed allow large quantities of lumber shipments go out of port. there fourteen mills operating around pere marquette lake @ height of production. thought there unlimited amount of timber harvest lumber, in less forty years woods cut down. etched history on stone wall explains local lumber industry had come end in 1917.

lundeen holdrege, nebraska. fulbright-hayes scholar studying @ academia de belle arte in florence, italy. lundeen has various degrees related art university of nebraska , university of illinois. holds bachelor of arts hastings college. lundeen lives , works in loveland, colorado. has sculpting studio there established in 1970s. lundeen has done commissioned work sculpt portraits , interpretive works universities, municipalities, foundations, , corporations.he member of national academy of design , national sculpture society.

the ludington mariners, past semi-pro baseball team of 1912–1924, represented bronze display of crouched baseball player bat in hand. played @ culver park , not associated major league team. sculptor created bronze sculpture mark lundeen. donated anderson family , reed family.


the ludington mariners old time base ball team started in 1912. in 1915 took break during world war i. team resumed again in 1920 , played 2 years. discontinued play, resumed again in 1926 , renamed ludington tars. team played ludington municipal marina located. team reassembled in 1993. home location play @ white pine village outside of ludington. play @ mackinac island , greenfield village. revived team, including umpires, dress in 1860s outfits. play rules of time period. fans watch games dress in spirit , wear period pieces. game players participate year after year , looking new ones.

the seventeen-foot stainless steel sail abstract sculpture symbolizes when lumber carried schooners great lakes ports ludington. first sculpture seen boaters spend leisure time on waters of lake michigan come ludington harbor. abstract sculpture created russian-born sculptor irina koukhanova. schoenherr family purchased sculpture , donated waterfront park @ ludington harbor.
